Painting the Impressionist Pastel with Judith Fulmer, July 14-18, 2025
9am to 12pm
The class will introduce students to painting the light with pastels using large masses and temperature through the block study method. On the first day, students will see examples of finished studies and a demonstration of a block study in pastel, and then students will be asked to do a block study on their own. The instructor will use guided participation methods and on-the-spot corrections to assist students in making appropriate color choices. Students will participate in a group critique to help them identify successful parts of their studies and provide detailed feedback and support where needed. We will then focus on applying what we have learned about expressing light through mass and temperature to the landscape using pastel. Terms such as Local Color, Brilliance, Mass, Warm Notes, and Cool Notes will be introduced and reinforced.
In case of rainy weather, we will apply these principles working on still life in our North light studio.
