“Painting The Effects of Light with Color”

This workshop is both for beginners and advance students. In this workshop students will learn how to paint the effects of light using color. Students will learn the importance of having a strong start using simple color masses which is the foundation of painting the effects of light.The first day students will paint outdoors from simple colored blocks on a tabletop which is the foundation of seeing color relationships; painting one color note next to the another.The second day students will take what they learned from painting the colored blocks and apply it to painting a building in the landscape.

The third day students will paint the landscape of Provincetown, all with the emphasis on using color to express the light effect in nature. Scott will begin each class with a demonstration along with individual instruction.

Students will take from this workshop a new way of seeing that will improve their painting skills En Plein Air or in the studio.

Students are encouraged to paint with a palette knife that allows for cleaner color and a focus on painting a strong start as appose to details.

Supply List:

Oil paints (Professional or Student Grade Paints are acceptable)

Titanium white (large Tube)

Cadmium lemon

Cadmium yellow light

Cadmium Orange

Cadmium Red Light or Cadmium Scarlet or Scarlet Lake

Permanent Rose

Magenta

Ultramarine blue

Cerulean Blue

Permanent green light

Viridian

Yellow Ochre

Palette knife:             ( Holbein, Loew -Cornell, RGM Painting Knife)

Easel:                           Stan-Rite #300 easel, French easel, pochade box)

Palette:                    (Medium to large palette) 

Gessoed Painting surfaces:      ( Masonite, Fiber Boards, Richeson Hardboards) Liquitex Gesso is recommended )

Day 1:    3-4 boards    11x14 or 12x16 for colored block studies,     

Day 2,3:  3-4 boards each day     8x10 or 9x12 or 11x14 

Paper towels

Hat with a brim

Trash bags

*Students should wear dark clothing; light clothing can reflect into the painting
